Handicap & points nights

Handicap swimming points, explained plainly.

A handicap or points night is a club-night tradition, not a touchpad feature. Here is how clubs actually run one, and exactly what EasyMeet does and doesn't do to support it today.

How a handicap night works

Two ways clubs run a handicap or points night.

Staggered-start handicap

A time trial sets each swimmer's handicap, their baseline time. On handicap night, slower swimmers start first and faster swimmers start later, by just enough that a swimmer racing to their exact baseline would finish in a dead heat with everyone else. First to the wall wins, regardless of raw speed.

Points for improvement

Everyone races a normal heat, but points are scored for how each swim compares to that swimmer's own best, not just place. A personal best is worth more than simply finishing first, which keeps the night fair across a wide range of abilities and ages.

Most clubs also run straight placing points alongside either system: a simple scheme like 4-3-2-1 for the top four is common, awarded race by race and added up over a season or a night.

What EasyMeet does today

PB tracking, built in automatically

Every swim gets checked against that swimmer's own previous best the moment the time is locked in: a new PB, a matched PB, or slower, with the exact margin. Previous bests carry forward meet to meet, so the history your handicap system runs on builds itself.

  • A PB verdict on every swim
  • Previous bests carried forward automatically
  • No spreadsheet to keep updating by hand

Every swim is checked against a swimmer's own previous best, carried forward from meet to meet, no spreadsheet required.

Points, by age bracket

Standings ranked as results land

Points for where a swimmer places add up automatically and rank within age brackets, so a 9 & under swimmer is compared against their own age group, not the open field. It is the same idea as a hand-kept points ledger, worked out for you as the meet runs.

  • Points for placing, across a wide range of places
  • Ranked within 9 & under, 10-11, and 12 & over
  • Updates live as results come in

Running it on the night

A handicap night, start to finish.

1

Time your trial night

Run a normal time trial on EasyMeet so every swimmer's baseline time is on record.

2

Set your own handicaps

Your committee works out each swimmer's stagger or improvement target, the same way your club already does.

3

Run handicap night as a timed race

EasyMeet times the night as normal: synced phones, a live board, and a PB verdict on every swim.

4

Points standings land automatically

Placing points add up and rank by age bracket as results come in, ready to read off or export.

Being straight with you

What this page won't oversell.

EasyMeet does not calculate a start handicap, run a staggered-start race, or work out an improvement target for you. Those stay a decision for your committee, the same as they are today. What changes is the data behind that decision: accurate times, a PB history that never needs re-entering, and points standings that tally themselves.

  • No automatic handicap or staggered-start calculator
  • Full PB history and points standings, worked out for you
  • Your club keeps its own handicap rules and formula
Questions

Handicap and points questions

What is a handicap swimming system?

A club-night tradition for racing swimmers of different abilities fairly. A time trial sets each swimmer's baseline, then handicap night either staggers everyone's start so a true-to-form race finishes in a dead heat, or scores points for how much each swimmer improves on their own best, rather than purely who touches first.

Does EasyMeet have a handicap calculator that sets staggered starts automatically?

No, not today. EasyMeet does not calculate a start handicap or run a staggered-start race for you. What it does give you is every swimmer's PB history and a points standings table, which is the data most clubs already use to run their own handicap system.

How does EasyMeet track personal bests?

Every swim gets a verdict against that swimmer's previous best time: a new PB, a matched PB, or slower, with the exact margin shown. Previous bests carry forward from meet to meet automatically, so a swimmer's history builds up without anyone keeping a separate spreadsheet.

How do the points standings work?

Each swimmer scores points for where they place in a race, more for a higher place, across a wide range of placings, not just the top few. Standings add up everyone's points and rank them, split into three age brackets: 9 & under, 10-11, and 12 & over.

Can we still run a handicap night with EasyMeet?

Yes. Time your trial night as normal so PBs are on record, run handicap night as a normally timed race (your committee applies whatever stagger or scoring your club already uses), and let EasyMeet handle the timing, the live board and the points standings.

Is this the same as a 4-3-2-1 points system?

Many clubs run a simple 4-3-2-1 points scheme by hand for placings. EasyMeet's points standings use a deeper table across many more placings, not just the top four, but the idea is the same: points for where you finish, added up over the night.
