Swimmers

Age group is just a label, e.g. “9 Yrs” or “Under 10”, so use whatever your carnival calls its groups.

Points table

There is no national standard for carnival points; every school sets its own.

How age champion points work

Most points in the age group wins.

An age champion is usually the swimmer who racks up the most points across their individual events within their own age group, not necessarily the swimmer who wins the most races outright. A swimmer who places 2nd or 3rd in several events can out-score one who wins a single race but scratches the rest, which is part of the point: it rewards a well-rounded carnival, not just one standout swim.

The points table itself works the same as house points: there is no national standard, so carnivals publish their own, commonly a top-four scale like 10/8/6/4 or 7/4/3/1. Age groups are usually set by age on a fixed date (31 December is the usual school-sport convention under School Sport Australia rules), but your club or school may band them differently, for example 9 & Under, 10-11 and 12 & Over.

Worked example: in the 10 Yrs group, if Ava scores 10 + 6 + 4 = 20 points across three events and Noah scores 8 + 8 + 4 = 20 points, they finish tied on points and share the age champion title for that group, rather than one being picked over the other by a coin toss.

Questions

Age champion questions

What is an age champion?

The swimmer who scores the most points across their individual events within their own age group, usually over a day or a season. It rewards consistent placing across several events, not just winning a single race.

Are relays included in age champion points?

Most carnivals count age champion points from individual events only, not relays, since a relay result reflects a team rather than one swimmer. This tool leaves that choice to you: simply don't add relay events if your carnival excludes them.

How are ties handled?

If two or more swimmers in the same age group finish with equal points, this tool shows them as tied champions (or tied runners-up) rather than picking one arbitrarily. Many carnivals award joint titles in this case; some break the tie with a swim-off, which is a decision for your carnival committee.

What age groups should I use?

Whatever your carnival already uses, there is no fixed rule. Common choices are birth year, age on a set date (31 December is the usual school-sport convention) or a club's own banding like 9 & Under, 10-11, 12 & Over. Type the group label exactly as you want it to appear against each swimmer.

Does this replace a proper timing system?

No. This tool only tallies points from the places you type in; it doesn't time races or manage a program. For that, a club night or carnival still needs a proper timing system on the day.
